One of my favorite things to do with shibori is to use things that are not so expected- like paint stirrers!  This pattern is so much fun and looks really sophisticated!  I love the way it makes a jagged abstract stripe down the middle.  I made this pillow from a linen- but if you want to dye a ready made pillow, you can check out the link above in the supply list.  It's 100% cotton and is great for pre reduced indigo.

DIAMOND SHIBORI TIE DYE PATTERN TUTORIAL

DIAMOND SHIBORI TIE DYE PATTERN TUTORIAL

This diamond pattern is really very simple to make with shibori folding techniques and an indigo vat.  I folded into the quarters and then accordion style on the diagonal.  Check out the video for the visuals.  I tied them up with paint sticks and string.  Then I dipped them in my indigo vat.  I'm using pre reduced indigo.  I have a kit available on my site for sale Indigo Kit
batik with washable glue

Easy Glue Resist Tutorial

Resist dyeing is typically done with wax, but I tried it with washable blue Elmers glue.  I made a simple geometric pattern that was pretty easy to draw. It's easy clean up and you can throw it in the washing machine.  I used a thiox indigo vat to dye this linen piece of fabric.  The linen takes the indigo very well.  I like to use a thiox vat because it doesn't need to soak for very long.  The glue gets soft when it's wet for too long and then it sticks to its self and starts to lift.  Using a dye that dyes quickly is the best way to avoid this. Thiox indigo vats are typically reliable and give a pretty consistent color.

Itajime Shibori Tutorial- Equilateral Triangle

This is one of my favorite patterns hands down! It's modern and geometric.  You can make it more white or more blue depending on the size of the fold.  I did this one with mostly white- I think it looks very understated and delicate.  Click for Supply List.

Scarf Tutorial Stitched Shibori

his scarf is such a great piece! There are a lot of possibilities with stitched shibori and this one is pretty straight forward.  It's not the fastest pattern, but the time is worth it! I suggest stitching while watching tv or while chatting on the phone.

Nail Head Shibori Indigo Dyeing Tutorial

This is a really fun pattern to make.  It can be as difficult as you want it to be and as easy as you want it to be.  You can make the nails very close together or farther apart.  I made my nails between 2-3 inches apart.  I made sure to tie the string around the nail head very tightly and wrapped around the nail head multiple times before tying it off.  I did this for each nail until I covered the entire piece.  I recommend doing this while watching your favorite show or movie.

It's a fun pattern to do and also makes a great conversation starter on your couch! What do you see?

The technique is fairly simple as far as a stitched shibori pattern goes.  Accordion fold the piece to the desired width and then tack the edge with repetitive stitching.  Watch the video for a visual.
