The Ice Dyeing technique is so much fun and really easy. It uses the same kind of dye as tie dye, but instead of mixing up the dye with water you use ice to mix the power dye into liquid. I'm making color swatches with a new kit and I think they turned out so nice! These will help me in the future when I'm picking out colors for new projects. Color theory and placement are so important! If you have a lot of dyes in your stash then this is a good way to keep track of what they look like. There is still a lot of dye in the containers and I can't wait to make more projects. The kit comes with soda ash and synthrapol, which is really a great value. Soda ash fixes the dye before you apply the dye and synthrapol is known as dyers' detergent. It helps to keep the colors from transfering from the dyed parts of the fabric and going onto the undyed parts of the fabric when washing.

First I prepped my fabric with the soda ash. I added about 1 gallon of water and the packet of soda ash. I prewashed my swatches and then soaked them for about twenty minutes.
While they were soaking I got my containers ready. I cut little triangular shaped holes in the bottom of 9 of them. Then I put a rock to create space and another container without holes to catch the run off. I wanted to make sure the fabric was not sitting in the dye. As the ice was melting I checked to make sure it wasn't pooling up on the the fabric. I did pour some of the run off out about half way through the melting process.
Once my containers were set up I took my swatches out of the soda ash solution and wrang them out. I wanted them to be damp but not too wet. Then I scrunched them up with as much surface area exposed as possible. I put about 5 ice cubes on top of each. The next step is to add the dye. I always wear a mask when I'm working with powdered dyes. It's not something I want to breath in. I use the tip of a platic knife and sprinkled a very small amount over the ice. I would say less than a teaspoon for this very small amount of fabric.
Then I waited for the ice to melt completely. I emptied out excess run off from the bottom containers as they were about half way melted. After the ice was complete melted I took them out to examine the pieces. They turned out great! Then I rinsed them with cold water until the water ran clear and washed them with hot with the synthrapol provided in the kit. I dried them on hot to set the dye. I got some really bright beautiful colors and I also like the mixed colors. Mixing colors with ice dyeing is really fun- they can split and do unexpected things when the colors mixed.

-Drying Rack- https://amzn.to/3gHQLmU
-Hot Plate- https://amzn.to/3gQ4lV1
-8 Quart Stock Pot- https://amzn.to/3d6w15J
Instructions:
I started with about 1 gallon of water in the stock pot and put it on the hot plate. I put the heat on medium and let the water come to a boil and simmer for an hour or so. I kept my eye on it to make sure the tea bags don't break- stirring gently. I then let it cool off for about 2 hours and then removed the tea bags. My goal was to get the most tea out of the tea bags.
During this time I prepped my fabric. I used 100% cotton fabric, but you can use any sort of cellulose fibers (plant based) such as linen, hemp, rayon, etc. I would not recommend polyester and if you use silk or wool you will need to add acid instead of salt (and keep the temperature lower). I used shibori folds for the fabric and tied them up with rubber bands. Check out my video for the folding techniques.
Once the tea bath was ready and my fabric was ready, I added the tied up fabric. I added more water at this point. It is important to keep the fabric covered with liquid. I turned the hot plate on low medium and got it back up to simmering. Then I added 1 cup of salt to help the dye stick to the fabric. The fabric and the dye are both negatively charged, so the salt helps with that. Black tea has natural tannins, so I didn't use a mordant. Mordants are usually made from metal, such as alum or iron. Salt is not a mordant. I would recommend Jenny Dean's book Wild Color to learn more about mordants etc.

I stirred in the salt until it was dissolved and then let the dye and fabric simmer on low for another 2 hours. After that, I turned the heat off and let the pot sit overnight. After it sat overnight I rinsed it with cold water and opened up my pieces to see how they turned out! Once they were opened I rinsed them again with cold and washed them on hot with synthrapol. After washing I set them with heat. I washed them by hand since it was such a small load, but you can also wash in the washer dyer.

One of my favorite things to do with shibori is to use things that are not so expected- like paint stirrers! This pattern is so much fun and looks really sophisticated! I love the way it makes a jagged abstract stripe down the middle. I made this pillow from a linen- but if you want to dye a ready made pillow, you can check out the link above in the supply list. It's 100% cotton and is great for pre reduced indigo.

You will need to accordion fold your pillow (or whatever you are dyeing) to be about the width of the paint sticks. Then sandwich the fabric with paint sticks and tie around string around the middle. I like to wrap it very tightly and go up and down multiple times. Finally, I will finish it off by tying it to the tail of the original knot. Then you’re are ready to dip!
After dipping let it sit for a an hour and then rinse with cold water and then wash on hot with synthrapol and then dry on hot immediately.

After following the folding instructions in the video mix up 1-2 gallon of water with 2/3 cup soda ash and let it soak for 20 minutes. Then apply the dye and wrap in cling wrap to let it batch for 6-8 hours. After it sits over night you can unwrap and rinse until the water runs clear and wash on hot with dawn dishwashing detergent.

I mixed up my procion dyes and then used a squeeze bottle to squirt the dye on to the edges of my equilateral triangle fold. I got quite a delicate pattern with a lot of white. If you want more color you can make the rubber bands around the acrylic pieces less tight and stick your squeeze bottle nozzles farther in to get more color inside the folds. It's a personal preference and takes a little practice. After applying the dye I wrapped it all up in cling wrap to "batch" for 6-8 hours. Then I rinsed with cold water until the water runs clear (that can be quite a while). Then I washed with hot water and dawn, and dried it on hot. It's done and ready to wear.
Have you ever used itajime templates with tie dye? Let me know how it went in the comments.

After it gets dipped then I allow the pattern to oxidize. The indigo will appear to be great before the air hits it. It's important to let it turn blue. Then you can rinse it and wash it with dyer's detergent.
I used this pattern to make a pillow seen here

Resist dyeing is typically done with wax, but I tried it with washable blue Elmers glue. I made a simple geometric pattern that was pretty easy to draw. It's easy clean up and you can throw it in the washing machine. I used a thiox indigo vat to dye this linen piece of fabric. The linen takes the indigo very well. I like to use a thiox vat because it doesn't need to soak for very long. The glue gets soft when it's wet for too long and then it sticks to its self and starts to lift. Using a dye that dyes quickly is the best way to avoid this. Thiox indigo vats are typically reliable and give a pretty consistent color.

Resist dyeing is typically done with wax, but I tried it with washable blue Elmers glue. I made a simple geometric pattern that was pretty easy to draw. Using a dye that dyes quickly is the best way to avoid this. Thiox indigo vats are typically reliable and give a pretty consistent color.
Before I started I made sure to wash the fabric without fabric softener. Then I divided it up into equal parts by accordion folding the fabric. That way I had a mark of how long to draw each dash with the glue. you can also use a disappearing fabric marker to mark where you want to draw with the glue. The tip of the blue glue is not very fine, so i would recommend using a pattern that is abstract for best results. I then started to draw with the glue. this pattern has a lot of dashes so it took me a while. I then let it start to dry. I eventually took out my blow dryer to help speed it up.
Once it was completely dry I was ready to dip in my indigo vat. I dipped it for less than a minute and let it dry on the drying rack. Then I rinsed it and dipped it again. When I rinsed it I noticed that the glue was starting to get soft, so I worked quickly. I dipped it again and the glue was starting to stick to itself. I got it all unstuck and let it dry again. I got a very dark color and I was pretty happy with it. Then I soaked the piece in warm water and washed it with synthrapol (by hand). I wanted to make sure that I got all the excess indigo off of the top of the glue. I let the piece soak for about 20 min. Then I washed it on hot with more shibori pieces I had to wash that day. I used synthrapol as the detergent and then I dried it on hot. Have you tried this method? Please tell me about it in the comments.

Dip dyeing is such a beautiful and simple technique. Another name for dip dyeing is ombre. Ombre is having a moment when it comes to hair dyeing and nails- but its also possible to do it on fabric! It's simple but a little tricky. I takes patience but it's worth the time and effort.
First make sure that you are working with a natural fiber- like cotton or linen. I'm working with linen. It's one of my favorite fibers to work with when it comes to indigo. You will also need to wash the fabric- also known as scouring.
Next you will need to prep your indigo vat- I'm using an existing one. If you need to punch it up you can add a small amount of chemicals or mix up a new indigo vat.
Then I got the fabric wet and I dipped the pillow first to the half way mark of the pillow. I held it with my hands in a circular way to keep the fabric not touching itself. After I dipped it for about a minute. I took it out and put it on the rack to dry. Make sure your rack is clean. I let it dry and then I washed it with synthrapol. I washed it by hand since it is so small. Then I let it dry completely. I decided for the second dip I would do a dry dip to avoid getting the tendrils drawn up into the white section. It's a little trick to get the dry fabric to go into the vat on an even plane. But I just worked it in slowly and let it really soak up the indigo. I honestly really like working with dry dip because it seems to get the darkest color. For the second dip, I dipped it about 2 inches above the first line of the first dip. I held it in the vat for another minute and then I put on the drying rack to dry again.
I only did two dips for this one, but you can do as many dips as you want to get the desired shade. If you make a dip dye piece be sure to post it on instagram and tag me @onyxartstudios so I can see your results!

I love to quilt with denim, even though it's a little rowdy. I love all things indigo and denim is the most popular thing to be made with indigo. I made a quilt years ago with denim and gathered all types of vintage jeans to make it. I couldn't bare to throw out the scraps, so I kept them. I've made a few projects with them. I wanted to do try an improv quilt. I'm not an expert quilter, but I grew up around quilting and quilters. I love the idea of quilting without a pattern, and making decisions as I go. I really do think that the fabric likes to dictate where it goes. I frequently stop to asses the layout and evaluate the lights and darks happening.
The first step was sewing a few pieces together to make a block for the center. Then I added strips alternating from horizontal to vertical to build out the face of the pillow. I wanted to make sure that the lights, mediums, and darks were balanced and not touching each other. It's not as easy as it seems.
Then I cut out the batting and a back piece to start hand quilting. I attached the Batting after pinning it extensively I used sashiko thread to hand quilt it. I made large basting stitches along the seams to accentuate the pattern. After hand quilting I made an envelope back and put the insert in there.
Have you done any improv quilting or made a denim quilted project. Let me know in the comment section.

Once you get the hang of using your kistka and the thought process of resist dyeing you can start to plan out your patterns. I like to do geometric ideas and also I think its fun to make tattoo outline drawings. I would recommend looking for photos or illustrations you like as inspiration for your designs. Drawing on an egg is sort of trick so it's nice to have a visual for reference. Here's video of an geometric pattern to give you some insight to my process.

Part of my dyeing practice is to use the shibori fabric that I make when I'm demoing during my workshops. Before the pandemic I would demo at the in person workshops and now I demo while teaching online. This leaves me with a lot of shibori pieces. Some are big enough to make a whole pillow. I sell them on my website. Here are the pillows in this sewing vlog. Which one is your favorite?

I let is sit overnight 8-10 hours to batch. It was very wet because its a thermal but if it were a tshirt I would wrap it in plastic wrap to keep it wet the whole time.

So first I folded the fabric into a diagonal grid and then marked the centers of the squares. I wanted to have a guide for where to put the 'webs'. Then I went about tying up the fabric with thread.
then I soaked it in the soda ash solution and applied the dye via the squeeze bottles included in the kit. I let it sit overnight in plastic wrap, and then rinsed in cold until the water ran clear. Then I washed it on hot with synthrapol and dried it on hot.

One of my favorite things to do with dyeing is to upcycle clothes that are stained or a little worn. Dyeing them brings new life and makes them look new. I did a semi circle pattern for this one and it turned out really great.
Before:
I started by folding it in half and then folding very narrow triangle folds at the side that got bigger as they went out to the sides of the shirt. I was going for a sunburst pattern. The cool thing about this pattern is that when it's worn on the body, it looks like a circle on the side- this video shows it very well.

Pipe wrapping is a really fun way of doing shibori. You can do it very nice and neat, and you can also do it very wild and free! I am doing the later today in this video. I like the organic shapes it make when the fabric naturally starts to pleat and twist when doing this technique.
Here's the pipe ready to go into the vat.

I'm still really into ice dyeing and I tried out another color that spilt. This time I'm trying some shibori stitching techniques and I'm ice dyeing over a screen. This means that I'm going to not be doing it "in the muck".
The color I used for this shirt is call ed Shiitake and it's really pretty! If you use it for tie dye it will be a neutral taupe color, but when you use it for ice dyeing it splits beautifully! If you look closely you can see purple, yellow, blue, brown, and pink all running into each other. It's really cool and comes out a little different each time. Watch the video for the whole process.

Ice Dyeing is really fun and easy. It's a bit of a process to set it up but after you get that done- you let the ice do the work for you. In order to do ice dyeing you will need procion dye. Procion dye comes in many brands, and some colors will actually split. Much like mixing paint, neutral color dyes are made from many colors. If you've studied color theory, you will know that to make brown (a tertiary color) you need one primary color and one secondary color. In water color you can also make brown from black and blue. You can come up with a whole palette of neutrals with different ratios of primary and secondary colors.
One of the colors that splits really well is brushed steel from dharma trading. I made this tshirt by doing the "in the muck" technique.

Before the ice melts
After the ice melts- let it in the dye and ice run off for 24 hours
I made a tshirt with just a little bit of brushed steel and it turned out really cool. I made it for my husband but now I want one for myself! You can check out the whole video on my youtube.

It's fun to do a bunch of different patterns at once and since babies change clothes so much, you can make them a whole shibori wardrobe!
this time around I did three patterns-
chevron, nail burrito, and stitched shibori
They all have different looks but are really fun and unique.
These onesies were dyed with pre reduced indigo in a vat.

I have been doing my research and my jacquard cyanotype kit is here. It's a chemical process that involves mixing two chemicals together and then letting them be exposed to the sun. This video goes over the instructions and my initial reaction to opening the product. I'm a big fan of jacquard products in general and I'm so excited to get to do some cyanotype.

Process: I tied up the fabric with various shibori folding techniques and then soaked them in the salt solution for about an hour. I warmed the salt solution before soaking to make sure the salt was totally dissolved. I saved the salt solution after soaking so I could add it to the pot after a while.

I was gifted a number of vintage huipiles that were brought back from Guatemala. They were incredibly beautiful and were covered with hand embroidery. They were very old so some parts of them were very worn out. So I decided to "upcycle" them and piece together the most fantastic parts of embroidery to make a pillow.
